Could anyone tell me how to strenghten the lower back--generally and in relation to golf--through some exercises? where would I find these exercises? My back hurts, or rather a spot on the left of the spine in the lower back area hurts and things feel better if i put pressure on the spot(s) with my hand....

Sorry for the delay, I received this email from eurokine, our staff physiotherapist:

The main problem with golf is the rotation at the lumbar region that is necessary for a good swing, so back strengthening is less the question than mobility. To have a safe rotation each vertebra needs to turn a little bit in relation to the next one & they all need to to follow smoothly.
If one vertebra is stiff in relation to its neighbour, in order to get the same overall rotation there will need to be more movement above or below the stiff vertebra. This obviously causes strain on the ligaments supporting the spine & thus strain on the intervertebral discs, & ultimately a painful reminder that we need to watch what we are doing!
Exercise is therefore important, like Pilates for example. Swimming is also good for suppleness, but as golf is a sport, it is important to prepare ones self & do stretching exercises before playing (which I believe most amateur golfers dont bother with!)
If you have never taken lessons with the Pro at your club, this too can be very useful as it doesnt need the swing gesture to be out by much for it to cause problems in the lower back. It's not a question of trying to be of a professional standard, or paying for a years worth of lessons but the coordination is important & isnt a natural movement for most people so a couple of weeks/months tuition will allow her to really get the most out of her new physical activity without landing up with a slipped disc!
A quick trip to a reputed well qualified (& personaly recommended) osteopath may not go amiss either |
